Blessings in a Backpack is a non-profit organization started in Louisville, Kentucky in 2008. It now serves children struggling from food insecurity in 45 states, including Indiana. In 2009, several compassionate citizens decided to take steps to address the hunger problem among Floyd County’s youth population and brought the Blessings in a Backpack program to our side of the Ohio River.
Thanks to widespread support in our community and a coordinated effort by many volunteers, the Floyd County Chapter of Blessings in a Backpack has grown into one of the premier Blessings programs in the nation. We have the distinction of being the first chapter to create a county-wide “hunger- free zone” instead of each individual school being responsible for securing its own volunteers and funding.
In the 2016-2017 school year, hundreds of caring people, organizations and local businesses worked together to conduct small fundraisers and secure donations, both small and large, totaling $97,636 to feed 1,227 children in Floyd County. Our goal for the 2017-2018 school year is to feed those children again and others in need.
Since the number of children enrolled in the program can fluctuate with enrollment changes, we budget to feed 1,500 children so that we can be sure to secure sufficient funding. It will cost $100 to feed a student for the 2017-2018 school year.
Our 2017-2018 budget for NAFCS students = $130,000 – $150,000
Last year, we were incredibly fortunate to secure the continued support of the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County and the City of New Albany, each of which committed to donating $35,000.
We are currently seeking additional financial support from businesses, churches and individuals who care about the future of Floyd County! If your business, church or other organization can help us provide nutritious, ready-to-eat meals for the Floyd County children we serve or would like more information about how to do so, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or click here for a copy of our flyer.
Many Thanks to Our Supporters
We extend our sincere appreciation to all of the Southern Indiana and Kentucky organizations and businesses which have supported Blessings and to the countless individual donors who have sent in checks, bought raffle tickets, participated in fundraising events at schools or dropped money in collection jars at events held by Blessings in a Backpack volunteers. Donations from individuals typically account for one-third of the funds we receive!
